20 July 2011

BELLINGHAM, Washington, USA -- Photonics industry expert and Laser Focus World Editor-in-Chief Steve Anderson Steve Andersonis joining the staff of SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, the Society announced today. Anderson will serve as Industry and Market Strategist for SPIE, and will be based near Washington, D.C.

"We are delighted that Steve has chosen to join us," said SPIE CEO Eugene Arthurs. "His efforts will strengthen SPIE's connections with industry and our work in creating a dynamic network linking educators and researchers with application developers and business leaders in the photonics industry. His expertise will help the Society to increase the scope and depth of resources for our industry members and customers."

Anderson's presence near Washington and familiarity with the industry in Europe, Asia, and North America will enhance the ability of SPIE to raise the visibility of photonics among policy makers and national research agencies, Arthurs said.

Anderson joined PennWell Corporation's Laser Focus World in 1993, and he has been leader of a highly regarded laser market seminar co-located with SPIE Photonics West. Prior to joining PennWell, he was Marketing Manager at Spectra-Physics in Europe and the U.S. for 15 years.

PennWell has named Conard Holton, Editor-in-Chief of Vision Systems Design, to replace Anderson, said Christine Shaw, senior vice president and group publisher at PennWell's Technology Group. Anderson will serve on the Laser Focus World Editorial Advisory Board.

Serving more than 180,000 constituents from 168 countries, the Society advances emerging technologies through interdisciplinary information exchange, continuing education, publications, patent precedent and career and professional growth.
