The mmost exciting part of my job as a professor is the intellectual freedom and flexibility to explore new research topics, get into new and emergent areas, and expand the forefront of scientific research. For example, I have worked on diode lasers for many years. A few years ago, I decided to get into something quite different, examining the possibility of making all-optical buffers using slow light, This has been an exhilarating learning experience, in addition, it it very satisfying to be able to take one's projects to fruition, to be able to bring one's idea from that drawing board to demonstration, I am also very fortunate to work with some the the most motivated and brilliant people from whom I have learned a great deal. It is contagious to work with people who are determined, tenacious and driven about achieving their goals. Finally, the most rewarding part of my job is to mentor students and see them grow professionally and personally.
