Women in Optics Funding

SPIE Photonics West Child Care Grant - Apply now

SPIE believes that parents should have an equal opportunity in sharing their research with the optics and photonics community. 

The 2019 SPIE Photonics West Child Care Grant is designed to supplement the cost of child care for SPIE members with accepted papers or posters at our largest annual meeting. Grants of up to $500 will be made in the form of reimbursements for expenses related to child care of children under the age of 13 during the duration of the meeting. 

Families are eligible for one grant per household per year. Deadline to apply is 2 November 2018. 

Eligible applications will be approved on a first-come, first-serve basis. Applicants will receive a notification of status by 15 November 2018.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicant must have a current SPIE Membership through 1 March 2019.
  • Applicant must have an accepted paper or poster at the 2019 SPIE Photonics West meeting.
  • Applicant must be the parent or legal guardian of a child under the age of 13 who will be traveling to the meeting.

Conditions of Grant:

  • Funding is to be made via reimbursement after the conference. 
  • Eligible expenses for reimbursement are limited to airfare of a caregiver or costs for hiring child care during the meeting. 
  • Abuse of the grant will result in future ineligibility. 

Reimbursement Policy:

  • Expenses for reimbursement are to be submitted within 30 days of the conference along with a completed reimbursement form.
  • Proof of purchase is required for all child care expense claims (includes airfare itinerary and childcare billing).
  • International reimbursements are made via bank wire and domestic reimbursements are issued by check. 


SPIE Women in Optics Chapter Activity Grant - Applications Open 1 October 2018

SPIE believes that local initiatives to raise awareness about gender equity in optics and efforts to empower women in the field have the potential to impact many lives. 

The 2019 SPIE Women in Optics Activity Grant is intended to do just that. This year, the grant is open to chapters, affinity groups, and individuals around the world who seek to increase opportunities for women in optic and photonics through networking, community building, outreach, and professional development. 

This is a competitive grant of up to $500. Application closes on 15 December 2018. 

Applicants will be notified of status by 28 December 2018.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicant must have a current SPIE Membership through 1 March 2019.
  • Activity must have a clear objective, audience, timeframe, and budget.

Conditions of Grant:

  • Funding is to be used during 2019 on specified activity.
  • A report of the activity will be due within 30 days of the date of the activity. 
  • Abuse of the grant will result in future ineligibility.
