Paper Abstract

A three-dimensional, multipurpose systolic architecture is proposed in which instructions, as well as data, propagate through the array structure. This paper presents the requirements and characteristics of this Data/Instruction Systolic Array (DISA) architecture. In addition, an algorithm for the multiplication of two matrices on a three-dimensional DISA is presented. Examples of two-dimensional DISA algorithms are provided to demonstrate the feasibility of the approach. Finally, analysis indicates that the performance of algorithms implemented on the DISA approaches that of those implemented on more traditional, single purpose arrays while providing the advantage of multiple, pipelinable functions.
