Paper Abstract

In this paper, applications of mathematical morphology to various image analysis tasks for autonomous image analysis, based on a morphological image analysis system implemented on Alliant FX8 computer at TASC, are discussed. The basic concept of the theory of mathematical morphology is briefly described. Simple examples are given to provide further insights into this theory. Some high-level algorithms for edge detection, noise cleaning and sharpening are investigated. Two new concepts, restricted dilation and erosion and pattern spectrum for target enhancement and detection are presented. The analogy between the role of pattern spectrum in shape analysis and that of Fourier power spectrum in signal analysis is explored.
