Analysis of the configuration of the modulation elements in an intracavity modulation laser

Paper Abstract

In the intracavity modulation laser with an electro-optical (EO) crystal as the critical modulation element, the configuration of the EO crystal, namely, location and orientation, has significant influences on the polarization and intensity of the output light. By employing the theories of light propagation in an EO crystal and the Jones matrix formalism, the influences of various configurations of the EO crystal in a typical intracavity laser system are presented, including the polarization of the output light, the modulation type (positive modulation or negative modulation), and the modulation efficiency. With the theoretical analysis and simulation results, we obtain some optimal configurations of the EO crystal for the intracavity modulation system, and experiments are carried out to validate our analysis.
