Paper Abstract

This paper describes the development by Digital Equipment Corporation of a tool to build expert systems for diagnosing problems in computer modules. The Expert's Toolkit (ET) consists of two parts: the Knowledge Acquisition,Tool (KAT) and the Intelligent Decision Engine (IDE). KAT enables expert technicians to capture their problem-solving strategies in a knowledgebase. IDE provides other technicians and operators on the manufacturing floor with access to the expertise captured in the knowledgebase. The ET system has evolved into a generic expert system building "shell." While ET has been used successfully to build diagnostic systems in other domains, this paper focuses on the computer module problem domain. It describes the problem domain, the design of ET, its basic features, constraints and limitations, the required hardware and software, and the lessons we learned.
