Paper Abstract

The exposure limits for lasers, and for other high radiance optical sources have a common biological basis. Hazard evaluation for broad band 400-1400 nm radiation may be based on the laser safety standard ANSI Z136.1-1976, or on the ACGIH occupational exposure standard for light and near infrared radiation TLV 1979. Results should be similar or closely related. The compatibility of the two standards has been examined for black body radiation and other continuous spectral radiation distributions. The influence of the source parameters on the exposure limits has been investigated. Results are presented for two cases: short time exposure to intense light sources, and long time exposure to near infrared sources. Retinal burn hazard exposure limits obtained from the two standards show a rea-sonable general agreement for both cases. Discrepancies between them can be blamed on the different models of the dependence of the exposure limits on the angular subtense of the source.
