Paper Abstract

The photochromic tracer technique is a flow visualization method, based on the introduction of a dark trace in a transparent liquid flow. This dark trace is formed as a result of the reaction of a photochromic indicator to an intense light flash. The light sources used are generally lasers, because they provide well-collimated light beams of high intensity in very short periods of time. The movement of the dark traces with flow is recorded on cine photographs, at up to 8,000 frames/s. Each subsequent series of frames contains the information describing the subsequent positions and shapes of the trace related to time. The photochromic tracer technique was described in detail by R.L. Hummel et al in series of papers (1,2,3).
