Paper Abstract

This paper presents an overview of the work on optically interconnected computer systems being conducted at the University of Delaware. It is our belief that the successful implementation of optical interconnect strategies requires not only the development of new technology, but also the development of new models to describe computer behavior. This is necessary because of the strong interactions between the design of the optical interfaces and their placement with the computer hierarchy. An analytical model of computer interconnection delays is presented which will enable the performance of new interconnection strategies to be evaluated and compared with traditional metallic systems. The results of this work are being used to develop an integrated electrical/optical interface circuit based on the selective growth of GaAs-on-Si. The growth process is described and results on device fabrication are presented.
