Paper Abstract

12-bit digitized IR images acquired with PtSi Schottky barrier detector arrays have been processed on Sun work stations. Two techniques for 8-bit global display are compared: the standard method of histogram equali-zation and a newly devised technique of histogram projection. The projection technique generally gives distinctly superior results as demonstrated on an extensive set of indoor, outdoor, day and night scenes. The new algorithm also affords a robust and powerful local contrast enhancement technique. For scenes where the "signal targets" occupy a larger fraction of the pixels (close-ups), projection and histogram equalization have comple-mentary strengths, and a hybrid technique, in which the first 25% of the occupied levels are equalized and the remainder are projected, yields the best features of each method.
