Paper Abstract

Contrast-detail analysis, widely exploited in medical image quality assessment, attempts to identify a limit to visual perceptual performance in the context of detectability of space-occupying lesions in homo-geneous background. This review of the technique includes i) a discussion of historical and contemporary luminance difference detection theories, ii) a critique of experimental methodologies, an examination of iii) inherent experimental precision and iv) analytical techniques, and v) a summation of merits and disadvantages of the approach.
