Paper Abstract

Automatic optical inspection and guidance in industry requires high speed, low-cost image processing if it is to be practical. Recent developments in high speed signal processing are leading to improvements in the capabilities of machine vision systems. However, there are still a number of tasks that lie ahead if cost effective performance is to be achieved. These tasks are discussed in the context of an example. The example chosen is that of the inspection of a hypothetical industrial part. A number of the technical and economic aspects of this inspection are outlined including specification of the manufacturing requirements, development of the illumination, algorithms and hardware architecture, integration of the system components and installation of the system into the factory. The relevance of this particular example to the general problems of industrial machine vision is discussed.
