Paper Abstract

The quantitative assessment of histopathologic sections has in the past been concerned primarily with karyometric determinations.1 Increasingly, though, the diagnostic information offered by tissue architecture is also being analyzed.2,3 This type of higher-level analysis is becoming increasingly attractive because of the development of laser scanner microscopes4 that allow the rapid acquisition of large-area high-resolution tissue section images, and the simultaneous development of very powerful but relatively inexpensive multiprocessor systems that provide the needed computational power to analyze complex images within a reasonable time.
