Paper Abstract

The powerful ABCD-matrix method, originally devised in geometrical optics and later generalized for gaussian laser beams, is extended here into the domain of partially coherent, gaussian Schell-model beams. The method is then applied to derive the closed-form, coherence-dependent imaging laws for gaussian Schell-model sources. Several applications of the formalism, such as the evaluation of the focal shift in optical systems under partially coherent illumination, are pointed out. The fully coherent (laser) and the fully incoherent (geometrical optics) limits of imaging are discussed, and some equivalence laws between imaging of laser sources and gaussian Schell-model sources are presented.
