Low-Frame-Rate Air-To-Ground TV Using Displacement Estimation

Paper Abstract

A computer-based matching strategy for on-line displacement estimation in low-frame-rate video aerial scenes is experimentally investigated. This strategy is required for regeneration of the continuous scene movement, based on movement-adapted frame interpolation. Efficient on-line operation is achieved by a hierarchical search algorithm with termination of the matching procedure at potential dissimilarity locations. The reference window is placed in areas of distinct scene structure, which are selected by a simple threshold test of a set of adjacent grey-level gradients. The performance is illustrated by the measured percentage of correct matching results, including the effect of scene structure selection, channel errors, and 3-bit DPCM coding. Presented results show the advantage of using struc-ture selection and indicate good performance at channel bit error rates up to 10-3.
