Development of a software-based IF GPS signal simulator

Paper Abstract

Due to the flexible ability, research on software GPS receiver is now attracting more and more attention. In order to evaluate a software GPS receiver's performance, there are two way to provide GPS signal. One is to use a set of real GPS signal measurements collected by a commercial front-end. The other way is to use software GPS signal simulator to generate digitized IF GPS signal. This paper develops a software-based IF GPS signal simulator for the L1 C/A code signal. The design principles, implementation factors, and verification are described in this paper. Firstly, a mathematical signal model is developed, which includes various error source, such as satellite clock error, ionosphere error, and troposphere error. Then one channel structure of IF GPS signal simulator represented one satellite is given. How to simulate the main modules in this structure is introduced. As the key point of IF GPS signal simulator, two iterative algorithms are introduced. Finally the simulator is verified by using a software GPS receiver.
