Variable patch sizes for normalized cross correlation in image pairs

Paper Abstract

Image registration plays an important role in many image understanding applications, such as stereo vision for depth recovery and biometric recognition. Correlation-based matches are often used in such registration applications. The performance of correlation-based matching algorithms such as the Normalized Cross Correlation (NCC) depends on the image patch size used in the computation. We present an algorithm that adapts the patch size so that the patch is distinguishable from other patches from the same image. The new method seeks the best balance point between matching performance and computational cost in NCC computation. Experimental results demonstrate the performance of our method.
