Particle swarm optimization to improve the coverage of a camera network

Paper Abstract

The field of view of one camera is limited. To monitor a large area, we often need to use multiple cameras together or a camera network. In general, the networks with more cameras can monitor larger area. However, using more cameras often means higher cost. In this paper, we study how to improving the coverage of a camera network by only adjusting the orientations of the cameras, where adding the cameras is not necessary. A particle swarm optimization algorithm was developed to solve this problem. On an experiment the algorithm improved the coverage about 14%. The result is also better than the existing approach.
