Paper Abstract

For the first time, the IODC conference included a contest on Illumination Design along with the traditional Lens Design problem. The proposed problem aimed to find the best solution for a flux coupling problem with high-efficiency and close to the source to target etendue-matching situation. A total of eight valid solutions were submitted showing a variety of approaches, including rotational reflective optics, free-form surfaces, square-to-cross light pipe converters, projection lenses (from singlets to spherical symmetric non-homegeneous refractive index ones). The winning solution was submitted by Bill Cassarly.
