Interference measuring method for polarization parameters of birefringent optical fibers

Paper Abstract

The simple method for measurement of birefringent optical fibers parameters of (the extinction coefficient, the directions of birefringence axes and the excitation coefficient of polarization modes) is represented. Method based on the interference of polarization mode beams at the output of the linear analyzer. The theoretical model is based on the Jones's matrix method. The influence of finite analyzer extinction on measurement accuracy is researched. The influence of source coherence is considered. Experiments with PM fiber (length from 1000 down to 2 m) present a extinction coefficient measurement in range from 100 to 75000. Experimental results are coordinated well to results of calculations and known data.
