Image-based optical detecting system used for the analysis of human activities

Paper Abstract

Automatic understanding of objective things is the ultimate goal of many detecting systems. Since optical detecting system can achieve this goal more effectively, it has recently obtained more and more attentions in many fields. This paper presents a novel hierarchical model of optical detecting system by demonstrating how it is used for human activities analysis. This paper is described in two main sections. In the first part, an optical detecting system model (ODS model) is proposed, which can be fit for not only the presented system, but also many others. Unlike other image processing systems, this model makes the system capable of changing optical image sensor and monitor freely according to the requirements of practical conditions. An implementation on ODS model is also presented in this part. The second part mainly describe an application (human activities analysis) based on presented system. The algorithm of the application mainly includes: contour analysis, human body parts detecting, human modeling and human activities analysis. In contour analysis and body parts detecting, a two-step view-based head location algorithm acting on the foreground region is proposed. Assuming the people detected are all stand-up, a subjective-partition algorithm based on Negative Curvature Minima (NCMs) and views are also proposed to identify the human body parts with a low cost of computation. At last, the results of the application based on our optical detecting system are given.
