Paper Abstract

This article discusses a number of the major problems confronting the development of present day semiconducting JR focal plane detectors for large array space based applications, shows that an entirely new detector technology based on superconductivity may circumvent many of these difficulties, provides detailed data on the characteristics of these devices and outlines the development program underway to exploit this new technology.
