A micro-CT system for small-animal imaging

Paper Abstract

Three-dimensional (3D) information is often required in scientific research. This work describes the set-up of a micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) system based on a digital radiography (DR) system. 3D information of specimen is carried out by the application of tomographic reconstruction algorithms. The DR system has a high spatial resolution, which can provide images of high qualities. The specimen under investigation is arranged on a 3-degrees system (x-y translation and z rotation). The rotation is controlled by a step motor, which can reach up to 0.028 degrees per step. The specimen can be easily moved along the source-detector axis so that different magnifications of details of interest can be obtained. Modulation Transfer function (MTF) of the system has been tested in order to determine its performance. At last, a preliminary experiment has been carried out on biomedical specimen using the micro-CT system.
