Controllable coupling to the second-order mode of a photonic crystal fiber

Paper Abstract

We demonstrate a novel technique for controllable coupling to the second-order guided mode of an index guided photonic crystal fiber (PCF). Efficient coupling of light to the PCF depends on synthesizing the appropriate input field distribution at the focus of a coupling lens, corresopnding to the spatial Fourier transform of the phase-encoded incident light. A π-modulated binary grating encoded on a computer-programmable spatial light modulator generates the appropriate field distribution for contorllable coupling to the second-order guided mode of a commercially available index-guided PCF wiht a triangular lattice air-hole structure.
