Power penalty due to cross-phase modulation (XPM) in a WDM IM/DD transmission system

Paper Abstract

Computer simulation is carried out to investigate the impact of Cross-Phase Modulation (XPM) on the Bit Error Rate performance of a WDM Intensity Modulation with Direct Detection (IM/DD) transmission system at a bit rate of 10 Gb/s with normal fiber. The two channel WDM system with pump and probe configuration is simulated using OptSim 3.02, an optical network simulation software distributed by ARTIS. The results show that XPM induced eye penalty increases with the increase of fiber length and pump channel power. For 2dB penalty, the maximum allowable fiber length is found to be 60 km, 80 km and 110 km, corresponding to input pump power of +10dBm, 0dBm and -10dBm respectively. XPM induced eye penalty can be reduced by increasing the channel separation between the probe and pump channel.
