Elliptic light polarization modulation of liquid crystal panels

Paper Abstract

We study the modulation of liquid crystal television panels (LCTV) when they are illuminated with elliptically polarized light. We demonstrate that once the LCTV is described by a physical model, the amplitude and phase modulations depend only on the polarization state at the input of the device and on the detected state at the output of the LCD. This enables the optimization of the modulation response in terms of the input and the output states and the physical model for the devices. Last, the procedure to find the polarization state generator and detector configurations is detailed, using a geometrical interpretation of the states and the plates on the Poincare sphere.
