Paper Abstract

Polarization effects such as polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and polarization dependent loss (PDL) have become the critical limiting factors for long haul high bitrate optical fiber transmission. This paper use Monte-Carlo numerical simulations to investigate the statistical performance of the PMD compensator in the 10Gbit/s NRZ optical transmission link with PMD and PDL, and the PMD compensator use the tunable SBG-FBG as differential delay difference (DGD) compensation element and output optical signal degree of polarization (DOP) as the feedback control signal. Statistical simulation results with the outage probability of the compensated signal eye-diagrams opening (EO) indicate the PMD compensation performance significantly decreases in the presence of PDL.
