Paper Abstract

Computer simulation is used to evaluate the performance of cascaded multiplexers/ demultiplexers in optical networks. The intersymbol interference (ISI) of non-return-to-zero (NRZ), return-to-zero (RZ) and carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ) formats caused by a series of AWG filters is simulated. We also consider the RZ formats with different duty circles transmitted in the optical networks. In order to suppress the power penalty caused by AWGs, a novel method is given out in this article. A synchronous clock is used to modulate the received optical signal so that enhance the clock part in the frequency field of the signal. This method can reduce the power penalty of AWGs and help optical signal to pass through more optical network elements in large area.
