Internal steel strain measurement inside of reinforced concrete by FBGS

Paper Abstract

This paper focuses on the steel strain measurement technics inside of steel reinforced concrete (SRC) by fiber Bragg grating sensors (FBGS). The technics include the stickup methods of optical fiber to steel and the connection design of imbedded FBGS with the external measurement systems. The traditional resistance strain gauges are also used to detect the internal strain for the comparison with the FBGS to validate the effectiveness of the technics. Two kinds of experiments were designed to deal with the problem the internal steel strain measurement with both effects of temperature and transverse strain on measurement result of FBGS on the concrete beams. The epxerimental shows that the technics introduced in the paper can protect the otpical fiber from being broken during the manufacturing of SRC and make the internal strain measurement effectively by FBGS.
