Paper Abstract

Holographic interferometry and electrochemical impedance (E.I.) spectroscopy were used in this investigation to evaluate the performance of the corrosion inhibitor RA-41 in low concentrations. The samples used consisted of carbon steel in seawater with RA-41 concentrations between 5-20 parts per million (ppm). The low concentration of RA-41 in seawater solution has allowed the assumption that this solution is ideal dilute with respect to the inhibitor. With this assumption the hypothesis was made that the inhibitor performance would be directly proportional to its concentration in accordance to Henry’s Law. This was then verified with the results of both optical interferometry and E.I Spectroscopy tests. As a result of this observation the performance of the inhibitor can be derived analytically at low concentrations. In this study both classical and optical methods were used to determine the efficacy of RA-41 in low concentrations. To gain a quantitative measure of the efficacy of the inhibitor the current densities of the cathodic and anodic layer of the sample were obtained by classical method for concentrations of the inhibitor that ranged from 5-20 ppm. Simultaneously the optical method was also performed for the samples. However what was measured was the rate change of the fringe evolutions. The rate change of fringe evolutions in the sample represents the results of the optical corrosion meter measurements of the anodic deposition and cathodic dissolution layers. The results of the tests were obtained and have been shown to both be proportional to the inhibitor concentration.
