Free-space laser communication system using VCSEL

Paper Abstract

Free-space laser communication features wireless, high-bandwidth, cost-effective, no communication licensing, and act. It has many advantages over microwave; RF spread spectrum, or fiber optic communication. A free-space laser communication system we developed is presented. Our system uses large receive aperture, multiple laser transmit beams and VCSEL (vertical cavity surface emitting laser) to reduce the atmospheric effect on the system features and to ensure eye-safe. The automatic alignment based GPS is adopted in the system. The system construction is presented, the laser modulation of VCSEL and laser receiving are discussed, and relative circuits are given. A bit error rate of 10-9 or better, link range of 2 km, data rate of 155 Mbps, and protocol-independent are achieved
