Dynamic performance of a disk-type magnetorheologic fluid damper under AC excitation

Paper Abstract

A disk-type fluid damper based on magneto-rheological(MR) fluid was developed and it is shown that the dynamic characteristics of the disk-type magneto-rheological fluid damper is controllable, and the dynamic behaviour of the rotor system can be controlled by the disk-type magneto-rheological fluid damper by application of an external DC magnetic field and the disk-type magneto-rheological fluid damper can effectively attenuate the rotor vibration. In this paper, the dynamic performance of the disk-type MR fluid damper for attenuating rotor vibration amplitudes under AC magnetic field is experimentally studied on a flexible rotor with an over-hung disk. It is shown that when the frequency of applied AC current is lower than 5 Hz, the disk-type MR fluid damper still can attenuate the rotor vibration, but the rotor motion is asynchronous. For an applied current with a higher excitation frequency, the disk-type MR fluid damper does not have any effect on the rotor system vibration. In the rotor vibration control of view, it is not necessary to use the AC power supply.
