Paper Abstract

In the presence of such extreme radiation as that encountered in SDI beam-weapons scenario, the Ni plating on Be telescopic mirror substrates will blister badly enough to severely degrade optical performance. Attention has accordingly been given to a bare-Be polished surface which can withstand irradiation through its high specific heat, high thermal conductivity, and low atomic number. Technologies pertinent to the production of such mirrors are here discussed for the case of an off-axis, f/2.0, all-Be telescope mirror for a diffraction-limited intersatellite laser-communication system.
