Presented is a novel bit-detection method, which is applicable to high-density optical recording systems using d equals 1 run-length limited codes. The method detects marks and spaces of length 2T in the read-signal, where T is one channel-bit, and ensures proper decoding regardless of the result of a binary slicer. The slicer takes care of the longer mark/space lengths; these are generally less affected by ISI. By applying the Selective ISI Cancellation method errors in 2T runs are mostly eliminated. This new method contains simple algorithms for detecting and correcting the 2T runs and has been implemented in a compact circuit-design, that has the potential for running at very high data rates. Simulation results and the application in an existing Recordable Phase-Change product demonstrate excellent performance at high recording densities and good margins for non-optimal recording conditions.
