Adaptive image enhancement in the presence of aperture phase errors using genetic algorithms

Paper Abstract

Aperture phase errors due to wave propagation through random media (troposphere in optics, troposphere and ionosphere for radio astronomy super large synthesis arrays) belong to the main obstacles for achieving potential angular resolution and image quality. One of the methods of finding phase corrections is the image sharpness maximization. Genetic algorithms for the image sharpness maximization are proposed and tested in computer simulations in this paper. Genetic algorithms are especially well suited for this problem, because they robustly find a global maximum in such a multi- modal task as searching an optimum aperture phase distribution for phase errors compensation. Results of computer simulations of image enhancement with genetic algorithms are presented, which show significant improvement of the test images quality. This approach permits to make both calibration observations of pointlike objects (bright starts of calibration radio sources) and to enhance images of extended objects.
