Paper Abstract

The limiting current that can flow across a parallel, planar gap under ac conditions is computed. As the limiting current is approached, the intense space charge of the beam may increase the gap capacitance by a factor of two to three over the vacuum value. Our numerical calculations show that a fully modulated beam may deliver up to 60 percent of its beam power to a load without forming a virtual cathode.
