Paper Abstract

This paper looks at the process for establishing appropriate industrial scenarios for collocated hapto-visual virtual environment systems, and at the visualization and interaction systems and display metaphors to support those applications. Collocated hapto-visual virtual environment systems combine quality 3D graphical environments with the interactive realism provided by haptic devices to provide an excellent platform for implementing scenarios. The 3D graphics gives a mechanism for accurately presenting spatial and attribute information. The haptic device provides a realistic real-time interaction tool that enables the operator to do ongoing useful work. Case studies from the mining and petroleum industries are used as illustrations.
