Models for calculation of dielectric constant of moist sandy-clayey soils in wavelengths from centimeters to tens of meters

Paper Abstract

Models of dielectric permittivity of sandy-clayey soils, detailed physical model and a simple model, are proposed. The models are based on mixture formulas, which are applied in several steps, by which different components of the soil are successively combined. For a mixture with very flattened inclusions Maxwell Garnett's mixture formula gives most accurate results. It is shown, that Maxwell-Wagner effect in clay in frequency range below several hundreds of MHz may be accurately described by Maxwell Garnett's formula. Results of modeling are compared with results of measurements. Three models with few parameters, depending only on the soil, are capable to describe the clayey soil having different moisture and temperature. Detailed model takes into account distribution of water between clay and soil solution, change of thickness of bound water layers depending on moisture and when freezing. Conductivity of bound water, its temperature dependence have been found for some soils. Debye relaxation spectrum of bound water was studied.
