Development of a side-looking subsurface radar for horizontal directional drilling

Paper Abstract

In this paper, we propose a side looking subsurface radar system for a horizontal directional drilling machine to be used for laying power cables under the roads. The system enables to detect unknown buried objects which may be on the side of the drilling rod to prevent collisions to them. For developing such system, we propose to use slot antennas and prove the usefulness of the antennas by some experiments we have conducted. We also show the effectiveness of the system by showing images taken by the system.
