Near field scattered from fractal metal surfaces: classical electromagnetic mechanism in SERS

Paper Abstract

By means of the rigorous integral equations describing the electromagnetic wave scattering, not subject to the constraints of electrostatic and/or dipolar approximations, we calculate the scattered electromagnetic field in the vicinity of random fractal metal surfaces. We study the classical electromagnetic enhancement, due to the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons, responsible in part for the SERS. The dependence of the field enhancement on substrate, excitation wavelength, fractality, and polarization is analyzed.
