Classification of radar clutter using features extracted from the time-frequency domain

Paper Abstract

In this paper, we determine the feasibility of radar clutter identification in the timefrequency domain. The goal is to compare the performance oftime-frequency domain clutter recognition with other schemes that rely on the raw backscatter data. The time-frequency clutter features used for classification are extracted using the Wigner distribution of the analytical component of the returned radar signals. This approach is an attractive alternative to other clutter classification schemes because it makes use of the time-dependence of frequency domain signatures or the frequency dependence of time-domain scattering features. The disadvantage, however, is that time-frequency signatures are based on the magnitude squared of the received backscatter signal and are thus characterized by high noise variance. Another clutter classification scheme that relies on the higher order statistical features of radar clutter is presented. The performances of both clutter classification algorithms are compared in scenarios of additive white noise, colored noise, and alpha-stable noise.
