Calibration of optical phase shifter using a Michelson interferometer

Paper Abstract

A method to calibrate an optical phase shifter used for digital speckle pattern interferometry was developed by using a Michelson interferometer and electronic charge- coupled device array camera. The phase shifter was constructed by attaching a mirror to an axially-poled lead zirconate titanate piezoelectric actuator. The results showed that for the particular piezoelectric actuator used, an applied voltage of 240 volts shifted the phase by 2 (pi) , and the application of increments of voltage in steps of 60 volts from 0 to 240 volts generated four steps of equal phase shift. The tests indicate that the phase shifter is well suited for digital speckle pattern interferometry, due to the good linearity of the phase shift with applied voltage.
