Integrated-area and feature-matching approach to the automated extraction of digital elevation matrices

Paper Abstract

Widespread use of detailed 3D databases for simulation and other applications is currently impeded by the cost of the labor-intensive database generation process. Improvements to the efficiency of the process will involve many changes, especially increases in the degree of automation. Perhaps equally important will be process changes, such as the elimination of duplicative steps and the tighter integration of the remaining steps. This paper describes an approach to this integration in the area of terrain elevation extraction and illustrates it with suggestive examples.
