Transputer-based embedded system for METEOSAT image data compression

Paper Abstract

The National Aerospace Laboratory of the Netherlands NLR realized under contract with the European Space Operation Center (ESOC) a system to demonstrate the feasibility of using data compression for the European METEOrological SATellite (METEOSAT) dissemination link. The used compression method doubles the amount of image data that can be disseminated to the users via the existing channel without introducing any errors in the reconstructed image after decompression. The compression and decompression functions are performed in realtime during the METEOSAT dissemination (166 Kbit/sec). For this project a multi processor system based on the INMOS Transputer has been selected to provide the required processing power.
