Role of two- and three-ion energy transfer processes in three-micrometer generation of erbium doped crystals

Paper Abstract

In the frame of the rate equation model for 3 micrometers Erbium laser, working on the transition 4I11/2 yields 4I13/2, the role of two-ion and three-ion energy transfer processes is examined. It is shown that though two-ion processes can describe the main characteristics of three-micron generation, to explain experimental facts as 2.8 micrometers lasing of Er:YSGG pumped in the terminal laser level, the contribution of three-ion upconversion from 4I13/2 should be considered. A quantitative estimation of this contribution for a Er(25%):YSGG laser, pumped at 1.533 micrometers , is tentatively performed.
