Optimizing the choice of an image-interpolating function

Paper Abstract

Noise exists in every practical signal, but it is seldom taken into consideration when one studies or performs interpolation. In this paper, we investigate the effect of noise on the performance of an interpolating function. Using this study, we propose a distortion measure that can be used as a basis for selecting an interpolating function for a practical signal. Attention is given to both uncorrelated noise and CT (computed tomography) noise. We have developed an algorithm to estimate this measure from representative images, and use both simulated and real CT images to show that selection of the interpolating function based on this distortion measure leads to a more accurate and efficient interpolation.
