Paper Abstract

The use of passive and active damping techniques which employ viscoelastic materials as the damping medium is discussed. The importance of identifying the correct material properties is described and certain problems which can occur at high frequencies are mentioned. A comparison is drawn between active damping (AD) and active constrained layer damping (ACLD) using PZTs as the actuators and it is shown that for the examples studied, ACLD offers advantages. The paper finishes with comments on the future directions for damping studies.
