Paper Abstract

Beside the determination of the particle size distribution and concentra- tion using different optical methods, in many cases, there is a great need for the determination of the distribution of particle charges and density. For charge distribution measurements, there are instruments based on the separation of aerosol fractions with certain electrical mobility, but their sensitivity is lower then several tens of e-, and their relative resolution is low too. We propose here the possibility of extending the laser method of aerosol sizing to obtain particle charge (or density if we have spherical particles) and size distribution simultaneously. This aim was achieved using an additio- nal opto-mechanical block in the particle sizer, and electronical evaluation of the signal enabling measurement of the pulse height and duration distribu- tion of the light impulses scattered from moving aerosol particles illumi- nated at two different laser spots along their path. The proposed method has a higher sensitivity than several e- charges and an increased resolution.
