Paper Abstract

Experimental and computational investigations of the plasmon resonances of a two dimensionalelectron gas (2DEG) in the far-infrared have been performed. The object was to study the effects oflaterally drifting the 2DEG, that is giving the electrons a net velocity in the plane of the charge sheet. Thesimplest description of the effect of drifting the 2DEG is in terms of a Doppler shift in the plasmonfrequency . For the case of the plasmon wavevector kx and the drift velocity vd being parallel, there aretwo plasmon modes (travelling up and down stream with respect to the drift) and their Doppler shiftedplasmon frequencies are ( coo being the plasmon frequency in a stationary 2DEG):
